Prayer and Fasting Week

Living Hope PRAYER AND FASTING Week

September 18 to September 24th

This September, the Prayer Ministry is asking that you set aside a week to begin a new journey seeking God’s guidance through prayer and fasting before we begin a new ministry season.  The journey begins on Monday, September 18 through to the 22 with a fast.  During the week, Monday to Friday from 7 to 8 pm, there will be a service of prayer and worship at Living Hope.  We will then conclude our journey with a celebration meal to break our fast after the service on Sunday the 24th.  Bring something to share.

There is power in two or more gathered together in prayer.  (don’t worry, you don’t have to pray out loud if you don’t want to. Your presence and silent prayers of agreement are as powerful).

Why we fast:

To draw closer to God. Through fasting and prayer we humble ourselves before God, so the Holy Spirit will stir our souls, awaken our churches, and heal our land according to 2 Chronicles 7:14.

What to fast:

Make your commitment…pray about the kind of fast you should undertake.  Jesus implied that all of His followers should fast.  Matthew 6:16-18; 9:14-15.  For Jesus, it was WHEN not IF.  Some examples are only having water for the 7 days, others might not eat until 6pm, and still others might fast other things like coffee, all electronics, or sweets etc. etc.

REMEMBER fasting is a personal thing between you and God, so consider carefully something that is difficult for you to give up for the week. If you only drink one cup of coffee a day then that’s not for you, but if you drink 4 or 5 cups a day then that would probably be good.  When you would normally eat that meal or grab that coffee or watch that show then that is when you spend time in prayer.

For most of us, this in not something we are used to doing.  That’s ok.  It is a step in the direction of looking to God and depending on Him.  He will honour all that you give with a sincere heart.  Mark your calendars and begin praying for God to lead you in this way.

Matthew 9:14-15

14 Then John’s disciples came and asked him, “How is it that we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?”15 Jesus answered, “How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while he is with them? The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast.

Matthew 6:16-18

16 “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18 so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
